The Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), through the National Research Foundation (NRF), established five Centres for Global Change (CGCs). Formerly known as the Risk and Vulnerability Science Centres (RVSCs), these centres are hosted at rural-based universities. They provide risk and vulnerability assessment services and data, making significant contributions to their communities while addressing global change grand challenges.

This project is jointly funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa. It evaluates spatial inequalities in water–energy–food (WEF) security and their implications for public health in rural South Africa. It also examines the projected impacts of climate change. The insights generated will support the development of integrated, future-proof policies to strengthen WEF security, improve public health outcomes, and enhance the resilience of vulnerable rural communities.
