South African hospitals already face a number of challenges that will affect their ability to care for COVID-19 patients. Individuals aged 60+, those with preexisting conditions or those with multiple conditions, and smokers, are most at risk to COVID-19.
The following set of infographics have been developed to aid the understanding of the factors that may amplify the risk of the coronavirus disease (abbreviated as COVID-19) for local communities in South Africa. The infographics are grouped according to three core themes that focus on (1) potential high risk areas for spread of COVID-19, (2) the vulnerability of individuals, and (3) the ability of the public healthcare system to cope with the infected population.

It is not the intention to duplicate efforts of dashboards tracking the spread of COVID but to rather present the exposure and vulnerability of communities to the disease. The team will be continually updating the dashboard as new data and information becomes available.
These sets of infographics make use of the latest publicly available data. Due to the pressing need for this information, data is presented at District Municipality scale. The team is working on higher resolution maps. Data was sourced from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), Health Systems Trust, Global Health Observatory of the World Health Organisation (WHO), National Census, and 2016 Community Survey (abbreviated CS 2016).
